My Cereal

Thinking back in time, long gone are the days when granola was created as  a vegetarian breakfast option. Nowadays cereals of all kinds of textures, flavours as well as an ample variety of grains and fruit are on display in attractive boxes for consumers to pick the box which suits best their search.

Bearing this in mind, our students in year 5 were presented with information on cereal boxes so that they could analyse and  reflect upon these products. They carried out a thorough analysis of the nutrition facts labels and ingredients lists. They compared two different types of nutrition facts and ingredients lists labels and drew conclusions on which would be the best choice if they had to buy one.

After close inspection, all the students deduced that slogans, brand mascots, elaborate packaging, toys and trinkets and sometimes even misleading health claims are components of these "healthy" breakfast boxes.

“Creativity is inventing, experimenting, growing, taking risks, breaking rules, making mistakes and having fun.”

Mary Lou Cook

Creativity came into action and it was time for Year 5 to create their own ingredients for a truly healthy cereal. Based on the expertise they had acquired by studying the different food groups, our students took major decisions regarding types of grains, flavours, colours, food ingredients as well as the shape they would like their cereal to have. Students created their own Nutrition Facts Labels and the Ingredients Lists.

The final stage of their product was the design of their cereal box, where this "TRULY HEALTHY CEREAL" should be promoted. Classes were flooded with catchy phrases, eye-catching colours and designs, fun activities, trivia games, toys as well as names, slogans and jingles which were worth being observed by advertising companies and manufacturers as well!
